The Pre-Production Process

Image
Our assigned production was to make a 90 second short film to be entered into the  DepicT!  competition. DepicT! is a short film competition welcoming filmmakers from all over the world to make great films. The entry requirements: To enter the DepicT! competition, our film had to be 90 seconds or less ( any longer and it would have to be entered into the  Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival),  and had to be completed after the September of the previous year ( a 2016 entry must be completed after September 2015). The competition welcomes all genres and production techniques. The films will then be shortlisted and judged by a panel of experienced judges. Previous judges have included: Chris Auty, (head of producing, National Film and Television School), Pegah Farahmand ( Editor of Random Acts, Channel 4) and Dick Pope (Oscar Nominated Cinematographer) to name but a few. The winners of the competition have a chance to win up to £2500, industry exposure, and so...

Production Diary DepicT!

12/10/16 Today was the second day of our pre-production. We are still working on filling out our storyboards however, I do feel like we are making good progress. As we work through, we have began to realise potential issues as well as continuity errors. Thankfully, because we are spotting them early we are able to correct and work around them. I am really pleased with how are project is shaping up and I look forward to continue working on it. 17/10/16 We are making good progress. We have completed the storyboard, risk assessment and finished the script. I really feel like our project is coming together however, we just need to organise the talent release and location. I checked out our original location but it just won't work. The room is too small and there is clutter everywhere. 19/10/16 As we will be shooting our film in Lowestoft, we helped out with Bekka, Nick and Raffy. This involved acting in their movie. We played the part of some young lads having a conver...

A DepicT! Short which I liked

Image
I really like the DepicT! Film, Cool Unicorn Bruv  as I felt that the acting was strong; a comical vibe and narrative was consistent throughout, as well as some great composition within the frames. I thought they used the shot reverse shot sequence really well as the characters interacted with each other. I really enjoyed the language and dialect used in they region which they were trying to create. It helped to make the film feel immersive. I thought the ending was really well put together. They added a special effect, the rainbow shot out of the horn, which was talked about earlier in the narrative making the continuity stronger. Not only this, but the bike seller's reaction made it feel as if the unicorn was nothing special despite its mythological status. In fact, the  At the start of the video, I thought it was interesting how they showed a wide angle establishing shot, cut to an over the shoulder shot and then back to another wide angle shot. When I was watching I was ...

Evidence of low budget in The Clerks

Image
The Clerks is a low budget movie which cost $27,000 and grossed in $3,073,428. Evidence for this low costing movie could be indicated by: The low use of light - a lot of the scenes where not exposed properly and this could be because of the limited equipment they had to use. As you can see in the image above, the characters are underexposed because of the poor lighting. However, the casting of the silhouettes makes this shot artistically very interesting  and works well with the action of them dancing. The small cast - they probably could not afford as many actors as they would have liked so had to make use of the ones they had available and reused them for multiple scenes. The small amount of locations- The cast did not move around much and mainly just stuck to the store. This could have been because of how the script was written or that they couldn't pay for the other locations. One example is the wake. You only saw them walk to the door but not actually any part of i...

Evaluation of continuity sequence

Image
For this project we had to make a short film with no more than 20 shots and include an exchange of a package. After some discussion, we decided to try and make a serious film with a goofy ending, just to throw the audience a bit. Plus, all our other ideas were a little sinister. The mise-en-scene is the composition and contents of a scene which helps to give the viewer information about what is going on. We chose the graveyard as our location as this would help give a more menacing, isolated feel to the mise-en-scene. I feel this works with our narrative as we wanted this slightly off feeling to do with the characters. Light can be used to help add mood or suggest ideas within a movie. We didn't have too much control over lighting as we were outside however, we did chose to shoot amongst the trees as they casted shadows over our subjects. Helping to further enhance this sinister feel. Thinking back now, I wish I had paid a bit more attention to the lighting to add a d...
