Production Diary DepicT!
12/10/16
Today was the second day of our pre-production. We are still working on filling out our storyboards however, I do feel like we are making good progress. As we work through, we have began to realise potential issues as well as continuity errors. Thankfully, because we are spotting them early we are able to correct and work around them. I am really pleased with how are project is shaping up and I look forward to continue working on it.

We are making good progress. We have completed the storyboard, risk assessment and finished the script. I really feel like our project is coming together however, we just need to organise the talent release and location. I checked out our original location but it just won't work. The room is too small and there is clutter everywhere.

As we will be shooting our film in Lowestoft, we helped out with Bekka, Nick and Raffy. This involved acting in their movie. We played the part of some young lads having a conversation and reminiscing of good times. Watching how my peers performed has made me aware of how I would like to conduct our own production...

We finished our acting for our peers depicT video today. I found it interesting to see how they worked as a group in their comunication and working process. It gave me ideas on how we should conduct our filming to try and be as efficient as possible.
Last night I completed our reconnaissance for our location where we are going to film. I feel that this room will work proving we put a white/cream sheet over one of the doors otherwise it will break the misenscene.

The first night of our filming is complete. I felt like we did really we and that having the actor (Jimmy) really brought the script alive. We managed to capture all of the shots that we needed and improvised to make some more. One example was the trombone movement which we decided to have a go at. It took a couple of practise runs but we got it in the end. The location worked really well. It was easy and quick to set up the miss-en-scene allowing to begin the filming swiftly. We did run into a bit of a problem with the battery life of the camera. Despite it being fully charged it didn't want to last much past 2 hours.

The second night of our filming was achieved tonight. In the end we used a road close to my house for our location because of how quite and unimportant it is. There was very few cars so we did not cause a problem to anyone. We asked the permission of the houses that may have been caught in the lens whether we could film out front and they agreed happily. The filming itself went well and again we collected all of the shots we required. The light wasn't too much of an issue either. We did have the ISO as high as it can go, so there is a bit of grain in our footage but we didn't have any choice. I did rent out a 1:8 aperture lens but it had no zoom. For this reason we never ended up using it unfortunately.

We began editing our film today. The footage looked great and it was really nice to see our project get pieced together and come alive. Of course, we noticed that there were some things which might have worked better shot wise, and other shots we would have liked to have collected. An example would be how we introduce emiT. He just kind of appears and continues straight into conversation. It would have helped if we introduced the character with either an establishing shot or multiple extreme close ups to add a bit of mystery and then reveal. Oh well, next time. Overall, the footage was good. We all had a go at editing and we all worked well. I am pleased with how things are coming along.

Today we pieced all of our footage together and now we just need to add all of our sound effects and music. I think if we layer ticking of multiple clocks and have some weird surreal sounds, it will really bring home the atmosphere we are after.

Again, we are still working on the sound of our DepicT! I am finding it rather interesting by the way that the music changes and adds so much to scenes. It really creates and atmosphere when done well. I knew music was important in doing this but I realise even more so now now because I was enjoying our movie without it, and now that we are including it; it is just adding so much more impact to our film. We still have a bit more left to do. The lads and I all think that our ending is a bit anticlimactic and that we need something to spruce it up a bit. We are trying to use sounds to help create tension close to the end scene. However, finding the right music to create what we are after is proving difficult.

We finally finished our depicT short today. We have layered all the music and made the final tweaks. We made the title tick at the beginning to try and add to the themed of the movie and add another layer of interest.

emiT has been rendered and loaded on to YouTube today. I am very pleased with our end product. I think we really worked we as a group and I enjoyed the experience of the whole process. There are parts which I would like to change and improve on like the ending as such. I never felt like we could really get that sense of despiration as Toby ran to the door, this kind of left the film on a slightly unclimactic ending . leaving the film with a strong ending. I feel this is partly because of the alloted time we had to shoot as well as how long our movie could be. Perhaps to correct this we would have to reshoot a couple of scnenes
