Evidence of low budget in The Clerks

Image
The Clerks is a low budget movie which cost $27,000 and grossed in $3,073,428. Evidence for this low costing movie could be indicated by: The low use of light - a lot of the scenes where not exposed properly and this could be because of the limited equipment they had to use. As you can see in the image above, the characters are underexposed because of the poor lighting. However, the casting of the silhouettes makes this shot artistically very interesting  and works well with the action of them dancing. The small cast - they probably could not afford as many actors as they would have liked so had to make use of the ones they had available and reused them for multiple scenes. The small amount of locations- The cast did not move around much and mainly just stuck to the store. This could have been because of how the script was written or that they couldn't pay for the other locations. One example is the wake. You only saw them walk to the door but not actually any part of i...

Evaluation of continuity sequence

Image
For this project we had to make a short film with no more than 20 shots and include an exchange of a package. After some discussion, we decided to try and make a serious film with a goofy ending, just to throw the audience a bit. Plus, all our other ideas were a little sinister. The mise-en-scene is the composition and contents of a scene which helps to give the viewer information about what is going on. We chose the graveyard as our location as this would help give a more menacing, isolated feel to the mise-en-scene. I feel this works with our narrative as we wanted this slightly off feeling to do with the characters. Light can be used to help add mood or suggest ideas within a movie. We didn't have too much control over lighting as we were outside however, we did chose to shoot amongst the trees as they casted shadows over our subjects. Helping to further enhance this sinister feel. Thinking back now, I wish I had paid a bit more attention to the lighting to add a d...

Photos Connotation Exercise

Image
Purity We used water in this photo to show purity. The reason for this was because water has strong connotations of purity, life and clean living. We placed the bottle on the grass to also help draw forth this idea of purity. Furthermore, the colour green produced by the grass is often associated with being ECO Friendly , recycling and nature; all of these things connote purity. The bottle is placed slightly on the right of the frame to help give the image balance. The camera angle is level with the bottle. This was chosen because we wanted to avoid giving the perception of power from the angle, whereas, by keeping it level, it keeps things humble . Strength This image shows strength through very literal reasons as well as some hidden semantics. The guy in the photo is lifting weights ,which after repetition, commitment and hardwork, you increase as well as define muscle. This dedication shows that the individual has to have strength in his personality as well as b...
